What Are Panic Attacks?

Panic attacks are episodes that can occur regularly or occasionally, where the victim experiences extreme fear or anxiety out of proportion to anything that is physically happening. A panic attack can include many symptoms, including sweating, trembling or shaking, palpitations or fast heart rate, feelings of confusion or disorientation, or the feeling that one is having a heart attack or about to die. These are extremely distressing symptoms, and if you suffer from any of them you are no doubt looking for relief.

What Causes Panic Attacks?

There are a variety of causes for panic attacks. When we speak of panic attacks, we are not talking about one specific disease, but really a variety of symptoms with different underlying causes. Some causes may include:

** A traumatic life event, such as the death of a loved one, the ending of a relationship, the loss of a job or financial catastrophe.

** A specific fear or phobia may trigger panic attacks. Phobias may be of any kind, such as claustrophobia, fear of public speaking, social phobias or fear of certain kinds of animals.

** Stress -someone who has a lot of pressure at work or in their personal life may experience panic attacks.

** Any serious psychological problem -sometimes a person has an emotional problem they aren’t consciously aware of and it’s expressed in symptoms like panic attacks.

Treatments for Panic Attacks

If you can identify the underlying cause of your panic attacks, that is where the treatment should be directed. For example, if you have a specific phobia, then you may try hypnotherapy or systematic desensitization to treat the phobia. Drugs can sometimes be prescribed to treat the symptoms of panic attacks until the cause is dealt with and the symptoms disappear.

Anything that reduces stress or promotes relaxation can be helpful, such as yoga, meditation or visualization exercises. These may not be enough to stop the panic attacks, but they can help to reduce the severity of the symptoms. There are also herbal and homeopathic remedies that can help with the symptoms, such as Rescue Remedy, one of the Bach Flower Remedies.
